KUALA LUMPUR: A 21-year-old man, currently serving time at a correctional centre for theft, was today sentenced to five years jail and two strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court here for robbery.
Judge Mahyon Talib handed down the sentence on Muhammad Shahrul Haikal Laysabri, 21, who pleaded guilty to two counts of armed gang-robbery, involving a total loss of RM1,123.40 in November last year.
He was sentenced to five years’ jail and a stroke of the cane on each count, to be served concurrently from the date of arrest, which was Nov 27 last year.
Muhammad Shahrul was jointly charged with another person, who is still at large, with robbing the cashiers of two convenience stores, one at Bandar Tasik Selatan and the other in Desa Petaling here, of RM189.20 and RM934.20, respectively, on Oct 18 and 20 last year.
They were then armed with a fork lock.
Last week, Muhammad Shahrul was sentenced to a total of 66 months jail and five strokes of the cane by two Sessions Court, also for a similar offence.
In mitigation, the accused, who was unrepresented, said he was remorseful and promised to not repeat the mistake.
Mahyon, when handing down the sentence, advised Muhammad Shahrul to not repeat his mistakes and be a useful person after serving his time.
“You are still young ... you still have a long way to go. When you go to Kajang Prison, take up skill learning so that you will not get involve in crime again,” she added. — Bernama
