BUTTERWORTH: The Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (MAQIS) in Penang has seized 83.966 cubic metres of sawn timber worth RM500,191 which failed to meet import permit requirements at the North Butterworth Container Terminal yesterday.

Penang MAQIS director Noriah Dahlan said the seizure was made following inspections on three timber containers imported from Australia and Hungary at 5.30 pm.

“Routine inspections by MAQIS enforcement officers found that the load does not comply with the import permit conditions, hence we have seized the consignments for further inspection,” she said in a statement today.

She said the case was being investigated under Section 15(1) of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011, which carries a fine of not more than RM100,000 or imprisonment for a period not exceeding six years or both, if convicted. — Bernama
