KUCHING: The Sarawak Region Five Marine Police (PPM) seized 610,000 sticks of smuggled cigarettes and a car worth a total of RM518,000 in Kota Sentosa here yesterday.

Its commander ACP Shamsol Kassim said today that a team of marine police had stopped a car driven by a 37-year-old local man near a house in Kota Sentosa at 4.50pm.

“On inspecting the car, they found five brown boxes containing 50,000 sticks of cigarettes worth RM40,000, for which duty has not been paid,“ he told a press conference at the Region Five PPM headquarters here.

He said the man was arrested after failing to show any customs clearance documents related to the cigarettes.

“Further inspections carried out in the house led to the discovery of 56 more boxes containing 560,000 sticks of cigarettes worth RM448,000, for which duty has not been paid,“ he said, adding that the confiscated car was worth RM70,000. — Bernama
