MPs from EMCO areas required to undergo Covid-19 testing

KUALA LUMPUR: All MPs returning from constituencies under enhanced movement control order (EMCO) and targeted MCO are to be tested for Covid-19.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun said MPs with positive cases in their constituencies should be tested for the virus as well.

At the same time, he urged MPs to follow SOPs by wearing face masks in Parliament except while debating or raising a point.

“MPs from EMCO areas have been told by the health ministry to undergo tests,” Azhar said.

He added that this decision was made following the identification of the Sivagangga cluster linked to a super-spreader strain of the virus.

On Saturday, Health Ministry director- general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 43 cases linked to the Sivagangga cluster had been detected in Kedah, Perlis and Penang.

The Speaker said MPs who had been sitting in areas reserved for visitors or Parliament officers could now return to their original seats.

He said transparent barriers had been put up to separate seats and ensure physical distancing among MPs in Parliament.
