PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak has been released on bail after the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency (MACC) completed their investigations into the tampering of the 1MDB audit report.
He had been arrested earlier in the morning minutes after he appeared at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya for a fresh round of questioning over the 1MDB audit report.
Najib was last questioned by MACC officials on Dec 6 for about four hours, supposedly on the same matter.
An MACC source said Najib was arrested close to 11am after he had arrived the Commission’s headquarters for questioning in regards to tampering the 1MDB report.
A source said the former prime minister he was released on the MACC bail with one guarantor.
“Najib will be charged in court on Wednesday under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009, which states that the abuse of power takes place when a person who is a member of a public or government body uses his position or the office in making a decision or taking action for the benefit of himself, his relative or associate,“ the source said.
On Nov 25, Auditor-General Tan Sri Madinah Mohamad said that parts of the 1MDB final audit report were removed, alterations had been made to the 1MDB audit report submitted by her predecessor Tan Sri Ambrin Buang in 2016.
She said the directive to make the changes came from Tan Sri Shukry Salleh, who was then the principal private secretary to Najib when he was prime minister, the sections mentioned the presence of fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, also known as Jho Lo.
Ambrin has repeatedly denied doctoring the final audit report, insisting that the one submitted with changes was “merely a draft”.
Others who have been question over tampering of the report include former chief Tan Sri Dzulkifli Ahmad, in his capacity as a legal officer in the Attorney-General’s Chambers, Ambrin, former chief secretary to the government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa and former 1MDB group president and chief executive officer Arul Kanda Kandasamy.
