SEREMBAN: The Negeri Sembilan Syariah Court has solved 4,130 cases or 59% of the total 7,000 cases filed last year, said Chief Syariah Judge of Negeri Sembilan Abas Nordin.

Between January and August this year alone, a total of 5,551 cases has been filed ranging from divorce, criminal to faraid cases with 57%t of it or 3,171 cases have been solved.

“We expected that by Dec 31, there will be an increase in the total number of the cases to over 8,000. (This is because) one divorce case will give birth to more cases, namely alimony claims, child support claims, as well as mutaah, child custody and matrimonial property claims.

“Hence one divorce case could turn into six cases,” he told reporters after the launching ceremony of the Negeri Sembilan Syariah Legal Aid (aNSar) programme by Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Munawir, here today.

Also present were the Tunku Ampuan Besar of Negri Sembilan Tuanku Aishah Rohani Almarhum Tengku Besar Mahmud, Ruling Chief of (Undang Luak) Jelebu Datuk Mendika Menteri Akhirulzaman Datuk Maarof Mat Rashad and Ruling Chief of Johol Datuk Johan Pahlawan Lela Perkasa Setiawan Datuk Muhammad Abdullah.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun and state Syariah Lawyers Association chairman Datuk Hanif Hassan were also present.

On the aNSar programme, the Mentri Besar said it was the brainchild of Tuanku Muhriz to provide legal aid for those with low income with zero legal fees.

“I hoped that syariah lawyers involved could provide the best service possible for aNSar to achieve its objectives,” he said, adding that the state’s Syariah Legal Aid was the first of its kind in the country.

Aminuddin also said that the state government has allocated a total of RM100,000 to aNSar as a reflection of the serious commitment from the state government to ensure the people received the assistance in their cases and for the implementation to be done promptly.

So far, there are 250 registered syariah lawyers in Negri Sembilan, of which 60 are serving in the state while the rest are practising in other states. — Bernama
