KUALA LUMPUR: The government has been urged to provide free intensive English classes to the people, especially those without higher education, skilled workers and those who work in rural areas.

National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) secretary-general Harry Tan Huat Hock in a statement today said this would improve the workers’ marketability.

“The NUTP is appealing to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to consider this proposal to increase the level of English proficiency in Malaysia.

“The impact of such a programme needs to be assessed and studied to boost the future of the country’s economy,“ he said.

Tan said English is considered a language that enables the people of the world to interact easily and effectively with the rapid development of modern technology. - Bernama
