Opportunities abound in digital world: MDEC VP

KUALA LUMPUR: Students and parents need to be informed about the wide range of jobs available in the digital world, said Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) talent development vice-president Dr. Sumitra Nair (pix).

“Many parents are known to encourage their children to take up courses to get them jobs in the ‘traditional market’, in careers such as engineers, accountants, lawyers, doctors and teachers. With the job market today changing fast, parents are still of a conventional mindset as they lack the knowledge about the wide variety of occupations available in the digital field,” Sumitra said.

She cited cyber security and said that there are more and more people today seeking full-time employment in this field.

Digital innovation is changing the work landscape. To ensure Malaysia remains competitive, it is important for us to equip our youth with digital skills so they are ready for the future and its challenges,” she said.

For a start, students and parents can gain information about the digital world through the two-day #mydigitalmaker Fair taking place at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec) on Sept 14-15.

“The objective of the fair is to create awareness and attract future digital creators by introducing the young, especially students, to the creative and innovative aspects of digital technology.
