MALACCA: The Malacca Islamic Religious Council (Maim) has distributed RM30,097,391 in aid to 8,109 people up till Sept 16.

Maim vice-chairman, Datuk Mohd Sofi Abdul Wahab, said the recipients totalled 7,855 poor and 254 fakir.

“For 2019, Maim has also allocated RM2.5 million in aid for mosques and surau in the state besides the money given out today totalling RM234,000 to 39 places of worship for Muslims.

“The donation is for upgrades to improve the comfort of mosque- and surau-goers,“ he told reporters after the launch of the zakat distribution squad (Skuad Agihan Zakat) and an aid-giving ceremony at Pusat Islam, Bukit Palah today.

The launch saw the unveiling of three new Maim vehicles worth RM124,301 and two motorcycles worth RM19,360 donated by Sinar Dialisis Sdn Bhd and Bank Islam (M) Bhd.

Mohd Sofi said the squad would help make the distribution of zakat for critical cases faster and allow Maim to reach out more successfully to asnaf living in the kampung (villages) and interiors.

“In addition to this, a new zakat distribution branch will be opened in Bandar Merlimau and Alor Gajah,“ he said. — Bernama
