GEORGE TOWN, Jan 13: A cafe operator in Penang who have been found to have decorated his outlets with wallpaper bearing drawings of Chinese communist leader Mao Zedong gave his statement to the police today.
Lawyer Dev Kumaraendra said his 40-year-old client who is a local and his Chinese national wife presented themselves at the Timur Laut district police headquarters today to give their statement to assist in the investigation.
“They came to give their statement today after they tested negative for COVID-19 and completed their quarantine this morning...they have no intention to portray elements of communism using the wallpapers in their cafes as claimed by various parties,” he told reporters today.
Meanwhile, State Criminal Investigations Department chief SAC Rahimi Ra’ais when contacted by Bernama confirmed the matter.
He said the case was being investigated under Section 47 of the Societies Act 1966 for publishing propaganda of an unlawful society.
On Jan 2, the two outlets in Pulau Tikus, here and Juru in Bukit Mertajam were viralled on social media with netizens criticising the cafes and its owner for using visuals with communist elements.- Bernama
