Penang rewarded for being pioneer in going green

GEORGE TOWN: The federal government has rewarded Penang for being a leading green state.

Minister of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Yeo Bee Yin (pix) said RM500,000 will be allocated to the state’s Tech Dome in Komtar to cultivate interest among the young in science and technology.

About RM2 million worth of solar panels will be given to one car park operator here and three schools here as well as the Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP).

The rewards were for the state’s pioneering move to ban the single use of plastics among retailers, Penang having most applicants to the Green Building Index, and the promotion of science, technology, mathematics and technology.

The identities of the car park and three schools would be revealed by Penang, Yeo said after attending the Penang International Green Conference and Exhibition at Gurney Paragon here today.

Yeo said the solar panels could be installed at the roofs of the car park and three schools to generate electricity. The energy generated would be sold to Tenaga Nasional Berhad.

MBSP was rewarded for becoming one of the five municipalities to attain low carbon emissions. The others are Shah Alam (Selangor), Subang Jaya (Selangor), Hang Tuah Jaya (Malacca) and Klang (Selangor).

Yeo said that her ministry has 50 solar panel sets, which would be installed in all states by next year.
