PADANG BESAR: A team from the 1st Battalion of the Ulu Kinta General Operations Force (PGA) today seized 34 sacks containing 1,020 kg of ketum leaves at about 12 noon yesterday while patrolling at the Mata Ayer Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) area, here.

Bukit Kayu Hitam PGA 1st Battalion commanding officer, Abd Aziz Abdullah said while conducting a patrol around the area, the squad saw a group of men walking into the bushes in a suspicious manner.

“When the group noticed the presence of the police, they all fled into a nearby forest and the squad found 34 white sacks believed to contain ketum leaves left by the group.

“We believe that the ketum leaves worth about RM153,000 will be smuggled to the neighbouring country due to its high demand,” he said in a statement today.

According to Abd Aziz, a police report was lodged at the Padang Besar District Police Headquarters and the case is being investigated under Section 30 (3) of the Poisons Act 1952. - Bernama
