KUANTAN: Police arrested an unemployed man and seized various firecrackers and fireworks estimated to be worth RM50,000 at a house in Taman Desa Damai, Bentong, yesterday.

Bentong district police chief Supt Zaiham Mohd Kahar said the 38-year-old local man was arrested in a raid by a team of policemen around 12.30am.

He said further inspection found various firecrackers and fireworks were kept in a box in the living room of the house.

“During the inspection, the suspect also failed to produce any licence or permit to keep and sell the firecrackers and fireworks.

“Preliminary investigation also found that the man had just obtained all the items and further investigations are still ongoing to identify where the suspect obtained the items from,” he said in a statement today.

He said the suspect was remanded for three days until tomorrow to assist in the investigation under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957 which provides for a maximum jail term of seven years or a fine of RM10,000, or both, if convicted.

Zaiham also reminded any party that it is illegal to sell or play firecrackers without a permit. -Bernama
