Remains of fire victims cannot be buried today: Exco

IPOH: The remains of the victims who died in the fire at the Puncak Jelapang Maju, industrial area, Meru here yesterday cannot be buried yet as there are still procedures which need to be complied with.

Perak Health, Consumer Affairs, National Integration and Human Resources Committee chairman A. Sivanesan (pix) said they had to wait for the dental records of all the victims for the body verification test.

“The burial process for the victims cannot be held today as we are still waiting for the dental record reports. We have to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) as this is a very serious case.

“So far, post-mortem has been done on three victims, it will be carried out on the other three as soon as possible and after that (post-mortem) the victims’s remains will be handed over to the police for further action,” he said at a press conference at the Forensic Department of Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun, here today.

Those believed to have perished in the fire are P. Thiagarajun, 40, believed to be the owner of the business at the premises and five part-time workers, namely Mohd Nor Aiman Abdul Rahman, 16, Mohamad Nor Ikram Mohd Husni, 15, Mohd Ikhmal Izzuddin Mohd Kamari, 16, Ahmad Faizal Aminuddin, 16, and Mohamad Azhar Shah Rosli, 19.

Sivanesan said the state Fire and Rescue Department was still trying to identify the cause of the fire at the two-storey shophouse which occurred around 1.54 pm yesterday.

Yesterday, Perak Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Asst Comm Yahya Abd Rahman was reported to have said all the victims were found to be charred beyond recognition and this made it difficult for the identification process.

Based on the signboard at the premises, it ran an event management business which supplied equipment for events such as canopies, PA systems and lightings. — Bernama
