BUKIT GANTANG: The Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) will carry out repair works of four dilapidated jetties here next month to help local fishermen, said its chairman Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal.
He said the repair works of the jetty located in Kampung Permatang Laut, Sungai Che Rahmat, Kampung Menteri and Kampung Nibong costing almost RM1.5 million.
“LKIM is concerned with the facilities faced by fishermen and this shows that the Perikatan Nasional government cares about fishermen’s well-being,” he said at a press conference after the launch of the fund called ‘Tabung Anak Bukit Gantang’ at the Sungai Kerang Multipurpose Hall, Trong near here today.
He said the tender for the repair works will be issued this month and construction is expected to be completed by December this year.
At the event, a total of 73 people from Trong state constituency received assistance from the fund.
Touching on the fund, Syed Abu Hussin, who is also the MP for Bukit Gantang, said that his office will allocate RM50,000 to open 500 accounts with RM100 deposit each to selected recipients in the parliamentary constituency.
“I urge parents not to withdraw the money as I will add another RM100 every year if the account remains active,” he said.
He said the move is aimed at encouraging the culture of savings among parents for the future of their children.
Meanwhile, Syed Abu Hussin also said that repair works costing RM2 million will be carried out at Laman Changkat Jering to turn it into a collection centre for fisheries and agriculture products, in an effort to prevent it from becoming a white elephant. -Bernama
