PETALING JAYA: The Registrar of Societies (RoS) has lifted its temporary suspension of the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC).
MTUC president Datuk Abdul Halim Mansor said in a statement that RoS had informed the union of the decision and said it would not take action to deregister it.
“RoS said the two decisions were taken as it was satisfied with MTUC’s explanation, backed by the documents we submitted in response to several issues raised by RoS arising from complaints lodged by certain disgruntled individuals,“ he said.
Abdul Halim added that RoS instructed MTUC to issue relevant notification as soon as possible to hold the MTUC Triennial Delegates Conference (TDC) in accordance with its constitution.
RoS also stated that it will monitor MTUC especially in ensuring that the TDC is held in accordance with rules and regulations prescribed in MTUC’s constitution.
“We are very pleased that RoS not only accepted our explanation on the issues it raised but also for making known its decision speedily in the interest of workers and trade unions in the country,” he said in the statement.
He added that the RoS decision to revoke the suspension and remove the cloud of deregistration which hung over MTUC over the past three weeks as a vindication of MTUC’s stand that it had carried out its functions responsibly and would be able to provide satisfactory explanations to RoS queries.
Abdul Halim said the MTUC leadership has already called for a special general council meeting on Feb 2 to discuss matters and preparations pertaining to the TDC.
MTUC secretary-general J Solomon meanwhile told theSun that MTUC is happy to be back in service for workers.
“Many union leaders and workers have called to congratulate us and will continue to support our good work.
“Our international counterparts also have congratulated us on this lifting of the suspension as they were very concerned about this unprecedented suspension of MTUC which has been an active labour centre,“ Solomon said.
On Dec 21, the RoS was reported as confirming the temporary suspension of the union which was enforced on Dec 19.
The RoS said it had received complaints on July 2, alleging poor management of the MTUC and the suspension was to protect the interests of the organisation from continuing to violate any of its rules.
The national labour centre reportedly represents 15 million workers.
