SIBU: The Seduan PPR project in Sibu Jaya, 25 km from here, will be the model in the Housing and Local Government Ministry’s (KPKT) new way forward in managing housing projects under the ministry.

Its minister Zuraida Kamaruddin said the project would be under strict monitoring by the ministry’s special committee headed by its deputy secretary-general to ensure its completion within the stipulated period.

“We are cleaning up the ministry. This is the first time we are doing this where the deputy secretary- general will be in charge of project monitoring,” she told reporters after performing the ground-breaking of the Seduan PPR project.

Last month, she had reportedly said that stern action, including contract termination, would be taken against contractors who failed to complete projects under the ministry after the Auditor’s-General Report in the last parliamentary session showed that some PPR projects had not complied with the conditions set.

“We understand if there are some minimal defects and we will give the contractors time to rectify them but if the defects are extremely bad, action will be taken,” she said.

Zuraida also urged the state government to assist in the setting up of a residents committee immediately after the houses are handed over to the buyers to ensure that the residential area will be well managed.

“The committee can look after the residential area to ensure cleanliness, prevent vandalism, maintain security, hold community programmes such as urban farming, or even engage the fire department to hold fire- prevention talks.

“This is what we are going to do and PPR Seduan will be a model for the ministry’s new way forward in managing PPRs,” she said.

Construction of PPR Seduan is undertaken by Pembinaan Masrafan Sdn Bhd at a contract sum of RM88,220,156 and to be completed by October 2022.

The project consists of 461 single-storey terrace houses, with five units allocated for the disabled, and other amenities such as a surau for 100 persons, a childcare centre, kindergarten and children’s playground.-Bernama
