KUALA LUMPUR: A male suspect has been remanded for 16 days to facilitate investigation on suspicion of abusing his mother which resulted in her death, at the Sri Aman People’s Housing Project (PPR), on July 31.

Sentul district police chief ACP S. Shanmorgamorty Chinniah said the man was arrested on the day of the incident and would be remanded until Aug 15 under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

He said police received a distress call at 8.10pm from a man, who received a call from his aunt concerning an incident of a mother being abused by her son.

“A team of police rushed to the scene and found a woman, (victim) in her 70s, in a sitting position on a sofa.

‘’A check found the victim’s hands and eyes were swollen and there was also blood on her head and both her legs,” he said in a statement here today.

Shanmorgamorty said preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was awakened from sleep by the suspect at about 7.30pm and a quarrel ensued, resulting in the son hitting his mother using a hard object.

‘’The victim was then rushed to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital and was confirmed to have died,’ he said, adding police had recorded statements from several witnesses.

A urine screening test found the suspect positive for marijuana and heroin but did not have any criminal record.

A post mortem was conducted on the remains of the victim yesterday. — Bernama
