Single father gets jail, whipping for armed robberies

KUALA LUMPUR: A single father was sentenced to five years in jail and eight strokes of the rotan by the sessions court here today after he pleaded guilty to four counts of armed robbery.

Judge Mahyon Talib sentenced Herman Abdul Rahman, 36, to five years in jail on each count to be served concurrently from the date of his arrest on Oct 1. He was also ordered to be given eight strokes of the rotan.

Mahyon also advised the accused not to repeat the offences as it would only jeopardise his life.

“Please learn the skills in prison ... you can learn bakery, batik printing and haircut. Once you are released, I hope you will not involve in crime anymore. Please repent, you have a daughter,” she said.

On the first count, Herman was charged with robbing the KK Mart in Sri Rampai of RM1,177.05 in cash, using a machete at 4am, on Aug 21, and charged under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 of the same law, which provides a maximum jail term of 20 years and liable to a fine or whipping, upon conviction.

For the second count, unemployed Herman was charged with robbing MyNews.com at Jalan Raja Chulan of RM258.10 in cash using a knife at 7.55pm on July 29.

He also allegedly to have robbed the Healthlane Family Pharmacy in Setiawangsa here, of RM400 in cash using a machete at 7.25pm on Sept 20.

In the fourth charge, Herman was accused to have robbed MyNews.Com at Dataran Jelatek of RM591 in cash at 6.48am on May 31, using a machete.

On the second, third and fourth counts, he was charged under Section 392/397 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum jail term of 14 years and liable for a fine or whipping, if convicted.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Nurliyana Mohd Jafri pressed for just sentence to serve as lesson to the accused.

Herman, who was not represented, appealed for leniency on the grounds that he has a four-year-old daughter. - Bernama
