KOTA BHARU: Three students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Kubang Kerian, near here have developed a smartphone application called ‘Recybin’ to facilitate waste management and recycling effort.
Teacher Wan Azrina Muhamad Zuki said the application was developed within a month by The Squadron Team (pix) represented by Nur Iman Akmal Mazue Fazrol and Muhammad Faris Daniel Muhammad Effendy, both 16, and Fareisha Adriana Farez, 14.
Wan Azrina told reporters today that the idea to create the application resulted from the low recycling rate among Malaysian households indicated by statistics.
She said to gauge its effectiveness in managing recyclable waste, the community around Mukim Pulau, Kubang Kerian, was roped in to test the application.
SMK Kubang Kerian was selected to represent Kelantan to compete nationally through the Toyota Eco Youth 2020/2021 Project: Reimagining Mobility hosted by Toyota Malaysia, which will be held virtually in May.
Wan Azrina said the school is collaborating with a recycling company in Kelantan, RD Papers, responsible for collecting recyclable waste.
She said a device would be placed in the rubbish bins to detect if the weight of the waste had reached the set limit and a notification would be sent to users’ smartphones of which they would then alert the recycling company via the application, to collect the garbage.
She said the school would be eligible for a grant from the organiser if the team won the national competition, adding that they planned to register the application on Google Play Store.
“We intend to further expand the use of this application to the community and also the Kota Bharu Municipal Council (MPKB) to protect the environment and open the minds of the public to manage waste that can be recycled,“ she added. - Bernama
