SPAN holds fun run to raise awareness on preserving water supply

CYBERJAYA: Get family and friends involved and put on your running shoes as the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) is hosting a fun run to raise awareness on the importance of protecting and preserving the country’s water supply.

The “Water is Life Run 2020” will take place on April 11, from 6am to 10am at Dataran Hibiscus, Anjung Floria Putrajaya, in conjunction with World Water Day celebrated on March 22.

SPAN Communications and Consumer Director Mohd Fazil said the run is part of SPAN’s initiative to spread information on the importance of water and encourage the habit of conserving water.

“As of 2018, the average domestic water consumption per person in Peninsular Malaysia and Federal Territory of Labuan was high, at around 226 litres per day compared to the targetted 180 litres per day by 2020,“ he said at the press conference today on the upcoming run.

“The main source of the water we use derives from rivers - about 82%“, explained Mohd Fazil, stressing the reason why we should conserve water, considering environmental changes among other reasons and the global water crisis.

He also hopes that the tagline “Happily together! Use water wisely!” will help create a sense of awareness on the importance of protecting and preserving water sources.

“Additionally, this run aims to develop a physically, mentally and emotionally healthy community,“ Mohd Fazil added.

The “Water is Life Run 2020” is now open for registration, targetted at 2,000, and offers participants a choice of a 5km or 10km run. Medals will be awarded. For registration or more information, visit https://www.heyjom.com/events/details/531/water-is-life-run-2020.
