Speakers for RTM’s Islamic programmes need Jakim credentials: Broadcasting Dept

KUALA LUMPUR: Every religious speaker selected to go on air on Radio Television Malaysia (RTM)’s Islamic programmes must have Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (Jakim) credentials first, said the Department of Broadcasting Malaysia.

The department today explained that a letter containing a list of 20 speakers for Islamic religious programmes on RTM channels that went viral on social media was only intended to inform on the proposed (additional) names of those who had been approved by Jakim.

“The list (of speakers) has nothing to do with any political party or individual,“ the department said in a statement.

The letter, signed by the senior private secretary to the Communications and Multimedia Minister, also stated that the list of 20 names had been approved by Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo for Islamic programmes on RTM television and radio channels.

Dated Oct 29, the letter stated that the list of speakers was received from the Special Affairs Officer (Religious Section) of the Prime Minister’s Department and that all of them had been screened, in terms of qualifications and expertise. — Bernama
