KUALA LUMPUR: Crime rates may have sharply declined as a result of the movement control order (MCO) but not all criminals are taking it easy.

On Monday morning, a Gardenia bread salesman lost his delivery van to thieves while on his routine work of restocking stores with bread loaves.

The theft went viral on social media, and those with information on the vehicle were urged to contact the police.

In a statement today, Gardenia Bakeries KL (GBKL) said the van was recovered in the evening of the same day it went missing about 450km away in Kijal, Kuala Terengganu.

It said the abandoned vehicle and its contents are with the police for investigations.

GBKL also said that upon the vehicle being released to it by police, all its contents will be disposed and the van will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected to safeguard the interest of its consumers.

Police are yet to comment on the case but it is believed that the thief might have stolen the van to ensure smooth travel to his destination as it was a commercial vehicle that comes under the MCO’s ‘essential services’ category and was allowed unrestricted passage.

Since the MCO was enforced, bread has become a highly sought after food item, often flying off the shelves in just an hour after it is restocked at stores by suppliers.

Provisions store workers who spoke to theSun said their customers would arrive as early as 8am in search of bread and would each buy at least five loaves.
