TENOM: Five members of a family who perished in a fire at a house in Kampung Menara Pamilaan early yesterday, were buried together at the Ulu Pamilaan Muslim Cemetery near here.
The bodies of Siti Khatijah Umar, 32, her sons Mohd Asy Sakiran Sulaiman, 10, and Mohd Zahid Hamidin Sulaiman, 9; daughter Lai Sapura Sulaiman, 3; and niece Nur Safadira Suhaila, 11, were buried at 6.30pm.
The sombre event was also attended by Siti Khatijah’s husband, Sulaiman Hajar, 40, who survived the fire, suffering burns on his head and arms.
Sabah Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Peter Anthony, who is also Melalap assemblyman, was present at the funeral after visiting the burned site.
When met by reporters, Peter said he would try to help the surviving victim find a new home.
“Apart from the (new) house, we will also consider other necessary assistance for him,“ said Peter who also bore the funeral expenses for all the victims who died.
Eight firemen in two engines from the Tenom Fire and Rescue Station were rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 12.46am and managed to completely douse the flame at 3.29am. — Bernama
