Three corner fight in Slim by election

PETALING JAYA: It will be a three corner fight for the Slim state seat as two independents and one Barisan Nasional candidate have submitted their nomination papers today.

Academic Dr S. Santharasekaran was the first to arrive at the Tanjung Malim District Council, where the nomination was held today (Aug 15), followed by acting Tanjung Malim Umno division chairman Mohd Zaidi Aziz and lawyer Amir Khusyairi Mohamad Tanusi.

He and Amir Khusyairi are contesting as independents but Amir Khusyairi is backed by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir and his yet-to-be-registered political party, Pejuang.

All three candidates’ nomination papers were accepted without any complications, said returning officer Shamsul Ridzuan Idris.

By 10.35am, they were announced as candidates vying for the seat after it fell vacant following the death of incumbent ADUN Datuk Mohd Khusairi Abdul Talib, 59, of a heart attack on July 15.

Early voting will begin on August 25, while voting day falls on August 29.

Slim is the second by election conducted under the new normal following the recovery movement control order.

It has 23,094 registered voters, comprising 75% Malays, 13% Indians, 10% Chinese, and 2% others.
