MERSING: Three staff of a private religious school died when the car they were travelling in collided with a four-wheel drive vehicle at Kilometre 23, Jalan Nitar-Mersing here at 1.40pm today.

They were Sodiq Abu Bakar, 40, and Shamjuddin Romani, 59, who both died at the scene, while Mohd Khairy Abd Jaafar, 37, died while on the way to the Mersing Hospital.

Mersing District Police Chief Supt Cyril Edward Nuing said early investigations found that all the victims were travelling from Mersing heading to Kluang.

“The car they were travelling in collided with a four-wheel drive vehicle which was believed to have gone into the opposite lane.

“However, the driver and passenger in the four-wheel drive vehicle suffered only slight injuries,” he said in a statement here today.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. — Bernama
