Two braille Quran Centres in Terengganu to open in February

KUALA TERENGGANU: People with visual impairments in Terengganu now have the opportunity to study the Braille Quran as two more centres are expected to start operations in February.

The two braille centres, costing RM3 million, will be opened in Kampung Raja near Besut and in Kerteh, Kemaman, with the first recruitment of 30 students each when they begin operations.

Malaysia Blind Muslim Association (Pertis) Terengganu branch chairman Mohd Fauzi Mansor said the upgrading works were underway to make the buildings more disabled-friendly.

“We thank the state government for their concern in our effort to strengthen Islamic faith among the visually impaired individuals in Terengganu.

“The setting up of these two new centres will greatly help the disabled who have had to commute from Dungun, Kemaman, Setiu and Besut as there is only one school currently operating in Seberang Takir,” he said.

He was met by reporters at the Braille Quran Recital competition organised by Pertis and the Yayasan Islam Terengganu, which attracted 15 participants, here today.

At the event, Abdul Latif Yusof, 39, of Bukit Tok Beng, Kuala Nerus and Afzam Mustafa, 39, from Kerteh, were crowned the champions for the male and female categories respectively and each received RM300 cash and accompanying prizes.

Commenting further, Mohd Fauzi said his association also plans to work with more government agencies, corporations and non-governmental organisations to hold more activities for more than 400 Terengganu Pertis members.

“If we can have the Paralympic Games for the disabled, surely we can hold Quran-based events for them too and we are prepared to do so if anyone is interested in organising it,” he said. — Bernama
