Video of cops flagging down motorcyclist for not wearing face masks is fake

PETALING JAYA: A video of traffic police flagging down motorcyclists on the Federal Highway purportedly for not wearing face masks is fake news.

Federal police traffic investigations and enforcement department deputy director SAC Datuk Mohd Nadzri Hussain said yesterday the video clip which is being circulated on social media was misinterpreted as police enforcement on motorcyclists and their pillion riders who failed to wear a face mask as required from Aug 1.

He said the footage was actually an operation carried out by Selangor traffic police against motorcyclists who had failed to ride on the highway’s motorcycle lane.

Nadzri said that during the operation police issued a total of 227 summonses against bikers who rode on the main highway.

“This shows there are still many riders who fail to comply with the requirement to ride on the motorcycle lane. We urge the public to stop sharing and circulating inaccurate news or information. Stern action will be taken against those who do so and cause public unrest,” he said.
