KOTA BARU: A suspected car thief got his just ends when alert security guards and passers-by foiled his attempt to steal a college student’s vehicle at Lembah Sireh here on Sunday.

A viral video of the incident shows the suspect being tied to a pole after the citizen’s arrest.

In the 4.20pm incident, the 36-year-old suspect attempted to steal the car which was parked at a shopping mall.

“A security guard who was doing his rounds was alerted to the suspect’s attempt. According to the security guard, the suspect was behaving suspiciously. The guard then informed his colleague and police about the matter,“ said Kota Baru district police chief ACP Abdul Rahim Daud.

He said the guards subsequently caught the man.

“The guards also informed passers-by for further assistance until police’s arrival,“ said Abdul Rahim, adding that police arrived at the scene about 5pm.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the car was owned by a 23-year-old college student who usually parks his car at the vicinity.

“The car owner then lodged a police report at the Kota Baru police station. The suspect also tested positive for methamphetamine and possesses 31 criminal records,“ he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 379 (A)/511 of Penal Code for vehicle theft.
