KUALA LUMPUR: The water supply to several parts of Klang Valley which was affected after the Semenyih Water Treatment Plant stopped operation yesterday, has been restored in stages.

A total of 47 per cent of the 372,031 customer accounts of Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) in Petaling, Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat and Sepang districts was reported to be receiving water supply as at 12 noon.

According to an Air Selangor statement, water tanker lorries will continue to be mobilised and 10 local service centres will operate for 24 hours until water supply is fully restored.

Yesterday, Air Selangor announced the Sungai Semenyih Water Treatment Plant has to fully stop operation after an odour pollution incident was discovered at Sungai Semenyih raw water sources.

The unscheduled water disruption was believed due to pollution from the Bandar Bukit Mahkota sewage treatment plant

Meanwhile, Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK) said the issue of Sungai Semenyih Water Treatment Plant closure was not due to wastewater treatment operations at the IWK plant, but rather the illegal disposal of waste near the IWK plant.

According to an IWK statement, IWK personnel with teams from the Department of Environment (DOE), Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas), National Water Services Commission (SPAN) and Air Selangor conducted inspections at the plant concerned and found the odour was from a chemical substance two kilometres from the IWK plant.

“IWK and DOE had lodged police reports on illegal dumping of waste. At about 10pm, IWK with the assistance of police, opened a manhole in the area involved and found the odour started from the manhole,” the statement said.

Luas and Air Selangor had inspected IWK plant again at 1am and Luas allowed IWK to continue operation as usual. — Bernama
