Woman duped in adoption scam

KUANTAN: A woman lodged a police report claiming to have lost RM2,750 after being duped in a baby adoption scam last month.

Pahang Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Supt Mohd Wazir Mohd Yusof said the 41-year-old woman from Benta, Lipis here said that she talked to a female suspect via telephone on Aug 4 about the matter.

“A few days later, the suspect sent her photos of three babies via WhatsApp and the victim had chosen a baby girl at a price of RM4,000. She was directed to make a down payment of RM1,500 but only managed to transfer RM1,200 to the suspect’s account,” he told reporters here, today.

On Aug 11, the victim transferred the balance of RM300 and provided her personal details including her marriage certificate to the suspect for the baby’s registration process.

Mohd Wazir said on Aug 13, the suspect had asked for RM500 as processing fee and the victim paid an additional RM250 to expedite the process.

However, on Aug 21, the suspect allegedly told the woman that there were some problems in the registration process at the National Registration Department, and on Aug 27, asked for another RM500 to complete all the registration process on the same day.

Following these excuses and there being no sign of the baby, the victim lodged a report at the Kuala Lipis Police Station yesterday.
