JOHOR BAHRU: A woman was believed to have fallen asleep at the wheel before her car skidded into a river at KM 61, Jalan Sungai Rengit-Kota Tinggi, in Kota Tinggi this morning.

Kota Tinggi district police chief Supt Hussin Zamora said in the 7.30am incident, Nurul Ain Shamyra Shariff, 22, was driving a Proton Persona car from Sungai Rengit towards Kota Tinggi. There were no other passengers.

“Upon arriving at the location of the incident, the car driven by the victim lost control as she was believed to have fallen asleep before it skidded into the river.

“As a result of the incident, the driver of the car suffered a neck strain and the roof of her car was damaged,“ he said in a statement here today.

Meanwhile, in a separate statement, Kota Tinggi Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) Operations Commander Senior Fire Officer II Mohd Rafi Mohd Nor said the Johor JPBM Operations Centre received a distress call on incident at 7.37am and dispatched 11 members to the location.

He said the victim was pulled out of the car by members of the public before the arrival of the rescue team who then carried the victim using a stretcher to the road.

“It is understood that the victim was on her way to her workplace at the Song Seng Wholesale Market.

“She was then brought to the Air Tawar 2 Health Clinic before being sent for further treatment at the Kota Tinggi Hospital,” he said. — Bernama
