SEREMBAN: A woman suffered burns in a fire which destroyed nine business premises in the Nilai 3 Industrial Area here earlier today.

Nilai Fire and Rescue station chief Bakarya Mohd Salleh said the station received the emergency call at 9.15am.

He said 30 officers and firefighters from Fire and Rescue stations in Nilai, Seremban 2, Mantin and Seremban, rushed to the scene with seven fire engines, and arrived at the location at 9.25am.

The fire destroyed nine business premises include shops that sell furniture, lighting and electrical appliances, grocery as well as an eatery, he said.

“It took us 30 minutes to control the fire from spreading to the adjacent store. The fire finally was put out half an hour later. However, operations on smoke management using vertical ventilation are still being carried out,” he said in a statement today.

He said the cause of the fire and the estimated losses were still under investigation.

The victim Sim Pei Shi, 29, suffered burns on the arm, as well as sustained injuries to the head and she received treatment from firefighters and medical officer from Tuanku Jaafar Hospital Seremban at the scene.

“Based on the information from witness Malim Pontin, 58, who works as a shopkeeper at the grocery store, while opening the outlet for business, there was a small explosion occurred at the fuse box and the fire was spreading too fast, that he and other friends failed to extinguish the fire using the fire extinguisher. They then asked the public to call MERS 999 for help,” he said. — Bernama
