Youth detained for violating MCO lies about attending tabligh event

KAJANG: A 20-year-old youth who was detained for flouting the movement control order (MCO) caused undue alarm at the district police headquarters here on Monday when he told police that he had attended the Sri Petaling tabligh event last month.

Fearing the worst, police personnel quickly isolated the youth before alerting the Health Ministry.

Ministry personnel carried out a disinfection procedure promptly but it all turned out to be in vain when police learnt later that the youth had lied to them about being an attendee of the event.

Kajang police chief ACP Ahmad Dzaffir Mohd Yussoff said police interviewed the youth’s family and learnt that he had not attended the event.

He said the youth had lied to police out of fear of being held under remand.

On Tuesday, his fears came true when he was ordered to remain in police custody under a four-day remand order.

The youth was arrested by police at 2am on Monday for defying orders to stay indoors after he was spotted loitering near an apartment in Balakong.

In a separate case in Shah Alam, the MCO that was implemented two weeks ago appeared to have brought the entrepreneurship out of two men but in the wrong business venture.

The men decided to process ketum leaves and sell the extract at RM20 a bottle.

On Tuesday evening, police raided a house in Section 24 where both men were held before a pot containing ketum water and three bottles of the extract were seized.

Shah Alam deputy police chief Supt Ramsay Anak Embol said today that the suspects who are in their 20’s and 30’s had commenced their illegal business just two weeks ago.

In another unrelated case, also in Section 24, police held eight men who were the passing time gambling in a flats unit.

Ramsay said the men were engrossed in a game of cards when police conducted a raid at their premises at about 5.30pm.

He said police also seized a deck of cards and RM29 from the suspects.
