THE sky was lit with fireworks as Sunway Velocity Mall welcomed the new year and the beginning of a new decade during the mall’s countdown celebrations at Jalan Peel
The theme of the celebration was “gold” and it was truly a golden celebration as 30,000 visitors joined in the festivities. Over 60 booths selling an assortment of items from the mall’s tenants, and food trucks were set up at "Food Street" or "Food Truck Lane", where visitors had an opportunity to choose from over 40 types of exotic cuisine.
Over at "Carnival Street", revellers took part in games and walked away with cool gifts. A photo booth had also been set up for visitors to take home keepsakes of the memorable celebration.
The mall also hosted a countdown concert with live performances by Hael Husaini, Janna Nick, Danny Koo, Insomniacks, Aina Abdul, Jieying, Juztin Lan, Dennis Yin and Dance Crew.
Shoppers, who spent RM800 (RM750 for Sunway PALS members or Velocity Mobile App users) in a maximum of four receipts at participating outlets, were able to redeem VIP passes for an opportunity to meet with their favourite celebrities.
Also at the countdown celebration were Sunway Malls and Theme Parks CEO H.C Chan and Sunway Velocity Mall general manager Phang Sau Lian.
“While we usher in the new year, we hope to get everyone from our multi-racial community to come together for the celebration to promote unity and harmony to usher a new beginning in 2020. We are also proud to partner with Tourism Malaysia to usher in Visit Malaysia 2020, which will definitely help to boost the economy,” said Phang.
At the stroke of midnight, the longest display of fireworks in Kuala Lumpur, a ten-minutes long synchronized fireworks display lighted the Cheras skyline with a burst of colours.
For the countdown celebration, the mall extended its shopping hours until 1am, to enable visitors and their families to shop and dine as they waited for the countdown to the new year.
The 2020 countdown celebration marks the mall’s second countdown event. The first one was held in 2019. Organised by Sunway Velocity, the event is supported by Sunway Integrated Properties, Sunway Medical Centre Velocity and Sunway PALS. The main sponsors were Maxis, Haagen-Dazs, Focus Point and AEON MaxValu Prime.
