SUNWAY Putra Mall invited children from Yayasan Chow Kit (YCK) to take part in the “Get Closer to Nature” activity together with 50 contestants from the Miss Tourism International 2018 pageant.

The event began with the “My First Garden Project”, where children were given sticks, gloves, fertilizers, plants and watering cans. The kids enjoyed getting their hands dirty and repotting the small Fittonias into the planter boxes with some of the contestants.

They then continued visiting the Mini Petting Zoo in groups, where the zookepers introduced the animals and demonstrated to the children and beauty contestants on how to handle the pets gently. Four lucky children were picked from the crowd to pet the animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and more by feeding and touching them.

The children also got the opportunity to experience the Rooms of Wonder, and even played in the magical snow together with the contestants.

“We hope to inspire people to remember the less fortunate and give them support, to create a more compassionate, loving and peaceful community. These activities also allows the beauty contestants to get closer to our community and learn about our diverse culture,” said Melissa Hashim, the Marketing Manager of the mall.

This programme is a continuation of the mall’s initiative to further educate the community and public on the importance of greenery and taking good care of Mother Nature. The mall first started this project before the start of the school holidays, where they visited several schools within the Klang Valley such as the Sri Bestari International School and Sekolah Kebangsaan Jenis Cina Nan Kai, to give the students early exposure on how to appreciate and take care of plants.

During the school visits, they taught the children how to grow their own plants which they could bring home.

Additionally, they also brought along the rabbits and guinea pigs to the schools as part of the programme. The effort continued by inviting their Putra Junior Club members over to the mall to continue with the garden project.

“Sunway Putra Mall will continue to support this meaningful cause by providing the community a platform that helps them learn and get closer to Mother Nature. This little garden at our mall is also a symbol of the hopes and dreams we all have for our environment,” added Melissa.

This initiative is in conjunction with Sunway Putra Mall’s Christmas campaign, ‘In the Woods for Wonder’ that started on Nov 23 and ends on Jan 1, 2019.
