NESTLE Malaysia and the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to officially launch a pioneering recycling programme involving kerbside collection for two townships in Petaling Jaya on Aug 24.

The initiative will be in line with Nestle’s efforts to shape a waste-free future, and is aimed at encouraging good recycling habits amongst local communities.

This pioneering project will see the partnership scale up new and existing kerbside collection programmes for recycling in Bandar Sri Damansara and Ara Damansara.

Nestle Malaysia also previously launched a recycling collection programme in People’s Housing Project (PPR) Lembah Subang 1 in Taman Putra Damai in partnership with waste separation and recycling solution provider, iCycle.

“On average, each Malaysian generates 1.17kg of waste daily. Approximately 90% of all domestic waste goes to landfills and already, there are too many landfills in Malaysia that are overflowing with waste,” said Petaling Jaya Mayor Datuk Mohd Sayuthi Bakar, who was present at the ceremony.

“This project will provide the opportunity to promote better recycling habits by making it more accessible for the community.”

Nestle (Malaysia) Berhad CEO Juan Aranols added that as the company is dedicated to shaping a waste-free future, it is committed to being part of the solution by bringing about positive change, which includes Nestle Malaysia’s transition to paper straws for its UHT range.

The partnership between Nestle Malaysia and MBPJ is expected to benefit over 13,000 households, with further expansion plans in the pipeline as the project moves forward.

Aranols said: “We are also pleased to unveil our new packaging communications, which features recycling education on-pack, to communicate to consumers on how to separate their Nestle product packaging to facilitate recycling.

“This will be carried on 80% of all Nestle recyclable packaging by the end of 2020.”
