Overpriced food caused by human error, says restaurant owner

    GEORGE TOWN: The popular 'nasi kandar' restaurant, Kayu Nasi Kandar in Bukit Jambul, has clarified that the price of its ladyfingers on a receipt, which went viral over social media recently, was caused by human error.
    Its managing director Burhan Mohamed said the right pricing for the ladyfingers in the restaurant was RM2 for five pieces and not RM20 as posted in the Internet.
    "Our cashier made an error, instead of RM2, he mistakenly punched RM20 for the item," he told a press conference at the restaurant today.
    Burhan apologised over the matter and hoped the affected customer would return to claim back the balance amount.
    "We are doing long term business, we have regulars, we don't simply charge extraordinary prices to our customers," he said.
    Burhan also justified the RM2.50 price of its 'roti canai telur', saying it is reasonable with the services and quality provided by the restaurant.
    A picture of the receipt, dated Saturday, went viral in social media when it was posted on Sunday and showed that 5 pieces of ladyfinger costs the customer RM20.
    Following this, five officers from the state Enforcement Division of the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism went to check the restaurant.
    When contacted, its deputy head Chin Ching Chung said the restaurant has been given notice to explain the situation.
    He added the restaurant operator would be given three days to submit the relevant documents and to explain the matter before any action is taken.
    He said if the operator failed to give a reasonable explanation within the stipulated period action can be taken under the Price Control and Anti Profiteering Act 2011.
    On Saturday, the restaurant was raided by the enforcement division officers after the department received a complaint from the public that it has been selling 'roti canai telur' at RM2.50.
