DAP will co-operate in investigations against member for sedition

KUALA LUMPUR: DAP will co-operate with the police in its investigations against party member Young Syefura Othman for sedition, but questions the timing.
During a press conference, DAP legal bureau chief Gobind Singh Deo said Syefura, or better known as Rara, was contacted by the police at 10pm on Aug 12.
"She is required to be at IPD Dang Wangi at 10am, on Aug 14 to provide a statement," he said.
It is believed the investigations is due to a Facebook post Rara made early last September which allegedly contained several hashtags deemed defamatory to the royal institutions.
Defending herself, Rara said: "The party will always respect both the Constitution and the monarchy. It was not my intent to mock or disrespect."
However, DAP leader Lim Kit Siang expressed his astonishment at the sudden move.
"After almost a year since the post, why are the authorities only investigating at this point?" he asked.
He cited an example of a blogpost dated Aug 27, which allegedly contained defamatory allegations against the 1MDB investigators and key Bank Negara Malaysia figures.
"It's been almost a fortnight since the post went online, but the authorities have yet to take action," said Lim.
Rather than focus on what he deemed as an outdated matter, Lim said the authorities would do well to tackle ongoing issues.
"Why not focus on questions which the public wants answers to," he said, citing the ongoing controversy over RM2.6 billion in Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak's personal bank account.
Also present at the press conference was Subang Jaya assemblyman Hannah Yeoh, roketkini.com co-ordinator Edry Faizal Eddy Yusof, and DAP Socialist Youth chief Teo Kok Seong.
