IT is important for all races to be united and put aside differences for the future of our children and beloved nation.

It is sad to note that “race and religion” are always cited by various parties for the sake of popularity and to stay in power. We need to put a stop to this. Otherwise, it is going to break the unity we have built over 62 years.

We need to ponder and give credit to all races who fought for independence regardless where they hail from.

We should drop terms such as “bumiputra” and “non-bumiputra” and dissolve race-based parties. Instead, we should be referred to as Malaysians.

We should also drop references such as “majority” and “minority” races.

It is important that these distinctions be removed as it is evident that we are still divided.

Unity should show in our actions. Have we forgotten the sacrifices made by our forefathers to build this nation? Are we going to destroy the unity and togetherness in the name of race and religion?

We need to ponder what is the true meaning of independence. It is not merely fighting against the British. It was the togetherness and unity among all races that won us independence.

Do not forget our armed forces, police and other uniformed bodies who secure our borders and keep us safe.

Independence should not be jeopardised by political differences, ideology and outside forces, which do not understand the bond we have built all these years.

Ponder how important unity, togetherness, respect, love and care are necessary for a nation to grow.

We should always remember that we have the Federal Constitution and Acts of Parliament that bind all Malaysians and heads of state.

Each and every right is protected therein.

We also have the Rukun Negara which makes clear the five principles that guide the citizens of this nation.

In the early 80s, there was a subject called “Tatarakyat” taught in schools. It should again have a place in the syllabus. It guides us to be a better human being and to love our friends who are of different races and religions. It also taught us to be respectful and polite. This is our true “budaya timur” that needs to be cultivated in our daily life.

My plea to all Malaysians – stop incitement, stop racialism and stop destroying unity. Let us come together as Malaysians and celebrate Merdeka with pride.
