IT IS most puzzling why the Transport Ministry is not enforcing the breathalyser test at business outlets that serve alcohol.
The “blow before you go” test is done in other countries like Australia to curb drink driving accidents.
It has been reported that most of the retail outlets (pubs and bars) have bought their own breathalysers.
Why is the ministry not implementing this test that will go a long way towards curbing drink driving accidents?
Putting the responsibility on the drinker to decide for himself whether he is fit to drive after a few drinks is a mistake.
Many drinkers would not know their limit and the amount of alcohol that they have consumed.
Some can drink a few jugs and be sober while some after a mug will feel “high”.
And no drinker will ever admit he is “drunk”, it is a question of prestige and honour!
The ministry hopes that drinkers would use e-hailing services or public transport after their rendezvous at the watering hole.
For those who do not want to leave their cars at the drinking outlets, some creative tow truckers in Kuala Lumpur have offered towing services to tow cars with the drivers back to their homes.
It has been reported that the towing services would cost around RM120.
How many would honestly use these services? Many would throw caution to the wind and drive away without any consideration and responsibility.
The way to stop drink driving accidents is to have breathalyzer tests conducted on patrons when they leave the premises.
Enforcement units must be stationed around areas where alcohol is served to check on the “state” of the car drivers.
