KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition MPs and state representatives must get permission from the state education departments to enter government schools for any official events, Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik said today.

This is a change from the previous Barisan Nasional administration as Opposition leaders were totally barred from schools, he added.

“They can’t campaign, bring party flags and so on,” Maszlee said, adding that they must be seen as representatives of the people rather than their parties.

“During BN’s time, Opposition MPs were usually prohibited from entering the school. In the new Malaysia, we are allowing it as long as they follow procedures.”

He said many Opposition MPs have had their applications to enter schools approved. He encouraged them to follow the example of PAS, which yesterday submitted an application list of leaders who were interested in entering school premises.

“So the rumours spread about me not allowing Opposition leaders to enter schools are not true,” he said.

“We hope more apply, and it will be better if they do so like PAS, by submitting an application list.”
