ONE Championship: ‘The Baby Shark’ Is Hungry For A Win In Manila

THE Baby Shark” Petchdam Petchyindee Academy swaps his kickboxing duties for “the art of eight limbs” at The Home Of Martial Arts next Friday, Jan 31.

The Thai warrior challenges Japan’s Kohei “Momotaro” Kodera under the Muay Thai ruleset at ONE: FIRE & FURY, his first appearance in the discipline after a triumphant run in the other striking art on offer in the organization.

“I’m feeling really confident about returning to Muay Thai and getting to use my complete arsenal again. I am used to the rules here,” the former ONE Flyweight Kickboxing World Champion said.

“It is relaxing for me. I don’t feel as much pressure when I fight Muay Thai because I’ve been doing it since I was a child. It is second nature to me.”

“The Baby Shark’s” proficiency in Muay Thai is unrivaled by his opponent. In 94 duels, the young Thai warrior has claimed 92 wins, grabbing the Lumpinee Stadium and WBC Muay Thai World Titles along the way.

Despite his experience in the sport, Petchdam played down his advantages over his opposite number inside the Mall Of Asia Arena.

Just like Petchdam, Kodera is well-versed in Muay Thai. In his last appearance in ONE Championship, the WBC Muay Thai International Champion knocked out Singtongnoi Por Telakun in 41 seconds, marking the fastest knockout in ONE Super Series history.

“Momotaro” packs power in his strikes, and Petchdam knows it.

“His speed and punches are going to be his biggest assets. I can’t underestimate him,” the 21-year-old said.

Due to that, the Thai hero will change his strategy when he trades leather with Kodera. Rather than using his fast-paced style, and an offensive game plan, “The Baby Shark” will patiently before he attacks his prey.

“I’ll be focusing on keeping more active in this fight and using my left kick. He’s got the punches, and I’ll be waiting to counter,” he said.

“He likes throws combos. I’ll be waiting to counter his punches with my elbows. I don’t plan to trade but will instead pick my shots.”

“I don’t know how the fight will end, it just depends on how everything plays out.”

“One thing is for sure though – I can’t lose.”
