Roma change ownership in deal between US investors

ROME: Dan Friedkin has reached an agreement for the purchase of Serie A club Roma from Jim Pallotta in a deal between US entrepreneurs worth €591 million (RM2.9 billion).

“I am pleased to confirm we have reached an agreement with the Friedkin Group for the sale of AS Roma,” Pallotta said on the club’s website. “We have signed the contracts [Wednesday night] and, over the coming days, will now work together to complete the formal and legal process that will result in the club changing hands.”

Pallotta, an investment businessman with Italian origins, has been club president since 2012. He is said to have been in talks with Friedkin since December, as Kuwaiti businessman Fahad Al Baker also showed interest for the Giallorossi in recent weeks.

Friedkin chairs the Friedkin Group, a business conglomerate with automotive, tourism and entertainment interests.

“All of us at the Friedkin Group are so happy to have taken the steps to become a part of this iconic city and club,” he said. “We look forward to closing the purchase as soon as possible and immersing ourselves in the Roma family.”

Roma, who are quoted in the Italian stock market, finished the 2019-20 season in fifth place and qualified for the next Europa League. They are to play against Sevilla Thursday in Duisburg in the last 16 of the event’s current edition. – dpa
