20th century musical gems this weekend

THE MALAYSIAN Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) will present musical gems from the 20th century tomorrow at 8.30pm and Sunday at 3pm at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP), KLCC.

Roberto Abbado returns to the podium to weave his magic on the MPO since their last collaboration in the Carmina Burana concerts last November at DFP.

This time around, the MPO will perform Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony, Shostakovich’s Symphony No.1 and Kabelvsky’s Suite from The Comedians.

The MPO will also perform Korngold’s Violin Concerto in D in collaboration with Japanese violin virtuoso Ryu Goto (pix).

Goto made his debut at the Pacific Music Festival in Japan at age seven.

He has since then appeared as soloist with world-leading orchestras such as The Philadelphia Orchestra, the New York and London Philharmonics, Münchner Philharmoniker, and Sydney, Shanghai and NHK Symphony Orchestras.

A graduate from Harvard University, Goto has performed at Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Centre, Sydney Opera House and Shanghai Grand Theatre, with renowned conductors such as Lorin Maazel, Tan Dun, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Fabio Luisi, Leonard Slatkin, Kent Nagano and Myung-Whun Chung.
