Just in time for the Year of the Rat, the latest instalment of the popular light-hearted Hong Kong film series, All’s Well Ends Well, premieres in cinemas tomorrow.

All’s Well Ends Well 2020 is a comedy movie starring Raymond Wong, Julian Cheung, Louis Cheung, Chrissie Chau, Dada Chan, Law Kar Ying, Law Lan and Patrick Tam, among others.

In the movie, Wong, Julian and Louis play a trio of con artist brothers who are on a mission to overthrow an ill-famed clan leader, played by Tam.

Due to circumstances, they encounter a duo of sister con artists played by Chau and Chan.

Together, the two sets of siblings join forces for the sake of justice and righteousness.

On a side note, love affairs also begin to bloom among them.

This 90-minute movie is directed by Wong, who also starred in the original 1992 All’s Well Ends Well film alongside Stephen Chow and the late Leslie Cheung, as well as its six previous sequels.

We recently had the chance to speak with Wong in a brief phone interview from Hong Kong.

Do you think that All’s Well Ends Well 2020 will receive good feedback from the public?

“I believe that this movie will be enjoyed by many people because it is a movie filled with humour from the beginning until the end.”

The original All’s Well Ends Well movie did quite well in 1992. Do you think that people will compare it to the 2020 version of this movie?

“This version of the movie certainly cannot be compared to the previous version. The reason is because some of the actors from the previous movie can’t be [involved] because they are not with us anymore.

“For instance, the late Leslie Cheung starred in the first movie 18 years ago. Where can we find another Leslie Cheung?”

How was the filming process for this movie?

“We did our best and enjoyed ourselves during filming because it was filled with laughter and joy. It helped us with the filming of this movie because last year, for a period of six to seven months, there were many unfortunate incidents happening in Hong Kong.

“We intend to produce a movie that will allow people to take their mind off the mishaps and enjoy the movie with their family.”

Was there any difficulty inviting well-known actors to join the cast of this movie?

“No, there were no difficulties at all. This was because we all work well together. I really wanted this joyful Chinese New Year movie to be filled with some familiar faces because it will make the audience happy.”

Julian Cheung had never starred in comedy films before this. What motivated you to make such a bold move to cast him in this comedy?

“Usually in an All’s Well Ends Well movie, there has to be a good looking actor among the trio. Last time, it was Leslie Cheung who was the good looking one, right? Julian does have some resemblance to Leslie. Both of them are polite and handsome.

“After working closely with Julian, I realised that he is actually quite a humorous person. But, his humour is very polite.”
