Missy Elliot to receive Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award

MTV announced on Aug 12 that Missy Eliiot will receive the prestigious honor at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards to be held later this month.

Previous recipients include Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Madonna, Guns N’ Roses, Britney Spears, Kanye West, Rihanna and Pink.

In addition to receiving the award, the rapper will perform live, marking her first time back on the VMAs stage since 2003.

Elliott launched her solo career in 1997 with hit album Supa Dupa Fly, and has sold over 30 million records worldwide. The rapper, singer and producer went on to win five Grammy Awards and seven VMA trophies including Video of the Year in 2003 for “Work It” and Best Hip-Hop Video in 2005 for “Lose Control.”

“Missy’s impact on the music landscape is indelible,“ said Bruce Gillmer, head of music and music talent, Viacom, and co-brand head, MTV International, in a statement. “Her creative vision across production, performance and songwriting is unmatched.”

On June 13, Elliot became the first female rapper to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

MTV and Pepsi will also host a pop-up museum fan event in New York City from August 24 to 25, detailing Elliot’s contributions to the hip-hop genre, with installations that allow fans to immerse themselves in Elliott’s music videos and costumes.

Comedian Sebastian Maniscalco will host the 2019 VMAs from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on August 26, from 8pm ET. - AFP
