MPO presents Schumann, Brahms

04 Dec 2018 / 13:51 H.

THE Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) is proud to present a programme of symphonies by Schumann and Brahms, long considered the most prolific composers when it came to musical romanticism.

The concert titled Schumann Meets Brahms will be performed on Dec 8 at 8.30pm, and Dec 9 at 3pm at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP).

The substantial Brahms’ Tragic Overture opens the concert. Filled with heroic defiance, it was written in 1880 and was first premiered by the Vienna Philharmonic that same year.

Brahms’ sublimely beautiful and lyrical Third Symphony closes the concert.

In between, the MPO will present Schumann’s Third Symphony, nicknamed the Rhenish Symphony.

It was composed whilst Schumann was enjoying his tenure as a Municipal Music Director of Düsseldorf in Germany.

Whilst there in the quaint little village, he immediately fell under the spell of the Rhine River, the countryside, the friendly society, and the picturesque nearby towns.

Schumann personally conducted the premiere of this work in 1851.

Leading the MPO from the podium is Russian maestro Stanislav Kochanovsky (pix) who returns to DFP after previously weaving his magic in a concert last year.

A regular collaborator with the Moscow and St. Petersburg Philharmonics, and Mariinsky Symphony, he has also worked with other major orchestras around the world.

These concerts are part of the MPO’s 20th anniversary celebration at DFP.
