ONE of Singapore’s most prominent indie-pop band The Sam Willows was recently in town for a one-night-only intimate performance at the swanky Wicked Club, in W Kuala Lumpur.

Fans of the band were treated to a surprise announcement from its four members, who revealed it will be going on an Asian tour in support of its 2018 sophomore studio album I Know But Where.

The San Willows — comprising siblings Benjamin and Narelle Kheng, Jon Chua, and Sandra Riley Tang — first formed in 2012, followed by a self-titled 2013 EP and its 2015 Take Heart debut album.

Its latest album debuted at the number one spot on the Singapore iTunes charts, and has gone on to chart in countries like Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan, as well as Malaysia.

While details of its I Know But Where Asia Tour 2019 have not been fully released, locations so far include Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia, with Kuala Lumpur being one its first stops next March.

Band member Chua said: “You can expect a big stage, big lights, a full band, and dances ... so it’s going to be exciting!”

Organised by Sony Music, the exclusive acoustic showcase last Tuesday first featured special opening acts by local singer/songwriters signed to the label.

Taking the stage first was 23-year-old singer Julia Duclos who gave a live rendition of her debut single Further, while 25-year-old Nick Yungkit better known as NYK performed Pretty Burn and Faded from his 2018 Unlovable EP.

When it came time for the main act, loud screams filling the enclosed venue plus vibrant display of lights welcomed The Sam Willows in the spotlight.

Setting the mood first with its catchy Papa Money, the band’s set list for the night continued with Thirsty, Save Myself, and Say So.

Saving Take Heart from its same-name first album - which has amassed 5,735,208 streams to date - for last, the band’s performance was echoed by adoring fans.

The small one-night-only show also gave chance for friendly interaction - much to the delight of fans - from the affable band members, who even posed for a massive group shot after the entertainment was over.

It’s safe to say, every fan that night got a welcomed dose of The Sam Willows.
