Lucy Liu will be playing a villainous demigod character in Shazam! Fury of the Gods alongside Zachary Levi, Asher Angel and Helen Mirren.
According to Variety, Lucy Liu will play a character named Kalypso while Helen Mirren will play her sister, Hespera. Both demigods will go toe-to-toe with the hero Shazam.
While the respective deities do not have an obvious counterpart in DC Comics, they are both daughters of the god Atlas according to Greek mythology.
Atlas is one of the six immortal elders who is the source of Shazam’s powers. Shazam has the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the courage of Achilles, the power of Zeus, the stamina of Atlas, and the speed of Mercury (did you realise the first letters of the name form an acronym?).
Not much else is known regarding the plot details of Shazam! Fury of the Gods yet, but the sequel will continue the story of teenager Billy Batson (Asher Angel), who is transformed into an adult superhero named Shazam (Zachary Levi) when he was struck by the Living Lightning.
Shazam’s Adam Brody confirmed that the sequel will feature the same comedy as the original with more fight scenes featuring the full Marvel family. Adam Brody played the adult version of Shazam’s superhero sidekick, who is actually Batson’s best friend Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer).
“I’m sure there’ll be moments of real peril that you take seriously as well, but leaning into the comedy and leaning into the goofiness and the wish fulfillment of it all is a pretty natural and joyful experience,” he said.
Also returning is David F. Sandberg as the director, with Henry Gayden writing the script.
Rounding up the star-studded cast is another actress who will be joining the Shazam family. West Side Story star Rachel Zegler is confirmed to play a mysterious key role in the film.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods will premiere on June 2, 2023.
